Tonight starting at 6pm, we will be having one of our first ever Flight Night! We will be featuring Hangar 24 and some of their more exotic brews. Including one that was named after a crazy aerial dogfight maneuver.
This bad boy is not for any sissy drinkers. For a beer, its the second strongest we’ve seen yet. Weighing in at 16.5% ABV, be sure that its the last taste on your flight.
Good news for all of you folk out there who like beer. (I would imagine that would be most of you reading this.) We are pleased to announce our Second Annual Local Craft Beer Festival. The Festival will be on June 17 so mark your calendars, we have. If you missed last years’, here’s what it looked like. More details to come.
His death follows the 2012 induction of the Beastie Boys into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Diagnosed with cancer in 2009 made it impossible to MCA to attend the ceremony, but was honored by a tribute to the Beastie Boys none the less. Other drama at the induction ceremony may have overshadowed the severity of MCA not attending, thank you Axl.
The Beastie Boys were the first white rap group to appear in the 80′s and it was thought that their breakout hit, “Fight for your Right” was a one time fluke. But after subsequent releases of their following albums, Paul’s Boutique, Check Your Head and Ill Communication solidified the group as a 90′s staple.
More recently they even released a 30 minute revisit of their classic “Fight for your Right” video featuring just about every contemporary comedian and actor. Definitely worth the watch.
He was 47.
Thursday night The Boss, Bruce Springsteen lit up the stage as vibrantly as someone half his age. Even in his sixties, which all the best acts seem to be nowadays, he still brought the raw Rock & Roll infused with R&B and Gospel.
During the show he payed homage to the fallen Big Man, Clarence Clemons who passed away late last year.
One of the major highlights of the evening though was the guest appearance of Rage Against The Machine’s Tom Morello who hoped up on stage and played a short set with the band.
I still think Bruce has one of the most intense “Guitar faces” when he plays ever.
One of the highlights of the Grand Opening night on April 3 was the unveiling of the Great Wall of Rock, revealed by Gene Simmons himself. The Great Wall of Rock is our tribute to some of the greatest rockers of all time. Now don’t get us wrong, this wall doesn’t show ALL the great rockers, if that were the case we would need a wall a mile long.
So we worked with the space we had.
One of the contributors to the Great Wall of Rock is the Canadian artist Dave Benning. Benning contributed some of the Key characters in the GWoR, including Elvis, Jimi Hendrix, Curt Cobain, and of course, our very own Gene Simmons.
Benning’s artistic style captures the character of the rock stars he depicts as well as getting the personal approval of Gene himself.
You can follow Dave Benning of Facebook and Twitter as well.
So, have you tried one of these yet? This brewery, new to LA will be having a pint night here one week from today.
One of our first pint nights since we re-opened, we will be continuing our Wednesday night pint nights here on out. They start at 6pm and as always, you get to KEEP THE GLASS.
For Crazy Mountain next week, we will be serving up Mountain Livin’ Pale Ale and Crazy Mountain Amber Ale. They come canned, but you still get to pout them in a glass and take it home.
So dig this, They conducted a study that concluded that beer actually make men smarter. I know, right?
So say researchers at the University of Illinois in Chicago.
They found that men with a couple of beers under their belts were actually better at solving brain-teasers than their sober counterparts.
To reach that surprising conclusion, the researchers devised a bar game in which 40 men were given three words and told to come up with a fourth that fits the pattern.
For example, the word “cheese” could fit with words like “blue” or “cottage” or “Swiss.”
Half the players were given two pints. The other half got nothing.
The result? Those who imbibed solved 40 precent more of the problems that their sober counterparts.
Also, the drinkers finished their problems in 12 seconds while it took the non-drinkers 15.5 seconds.
“We found at 0.07 blood alcohol, people were worse at working memory tasks, but they were better at creative problem-solving tasks,” psychologist Jennifer Wiley reported on the Federation of Associations in Behavioral and Brain Sciences (FABBS) site.
So think about that the next time you come in.
On this day in Rock history, Patti Smith (known as the punk-rock, poet laureate) released her breakthrough hit single “Because the Night” in 1978, which was co-written by none other than the Boss, Bruce Springsteen. These guys really like having names added to their names.
This is the 2009 R&R Hall of Fame “duet” that they did… with U2, so would that be an ensemble?
Smith’s influence on Rock music spans far beyond her career. “Because the Night” was Patti Smith’s big song that brought her into mainstream music. However, she had been huge in the underground scene for a while in New York performing at Clubs like the CBGB with bands like the Ramones.
Before she left NYC, she was also a writer for some small little magazines including Rolling Stone and Creem.
She later was married to Fred “Sonic’ Smith of the MC5 (neither of them had to change their names for the marriage, sweet) They had a son who would then go on to marry White Stripes drummer, Meg White.
If you haven’t heard much Patti Smith, she is definitely worth checking out. She’s even been known to play a free concert here and there at the Santa Monica Pier. Last time, Flea was playing bass.
Rock and Brews is happy to get some of our own back after the first weekend of Coachella. Lots of great bands are on the lineup this year, some old, some new, some have been out of the game for 16 years. Tupac performed “live” for the first time in 16. Here is Jimmy Kimmel’s Take on it.
Some think that this could be the future of live music allowing people to watch “live” performances from bands who have been dead for years. Rumors have been floating around that this same technology might be used to bring back Kurt Cobain for a Nirvana reunion.
Yeah, don’t hold your breath.
If you missed it, Christine Devine was at our Grand Opening and had the chance to talk to some of the rockstars and guests that attended. Gene, Michael, and Dave were given the opportunity to talk Rock and Brews at their studios as well.
